The Bolshoi Ballet: Carmen & Petrushka

June 30, 2019 @ 12:55 pm - 3:00 pm

This performance is an encore HD broadcast from Moscow.
Running Time: 2 hours, including one intermission

Featuring the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet, this is a staging of two one-act ballets.

CARMEN: This story centers on Carmen, Don José and the bullfighter Escamillo. Carmen is a passionate, free-spirited woman in contrast to the temperamental and fickle Don José. Fate, a ballerina dressed in black and a representation of Carmen’s alter ego, tells Carmen’s fortune with a deck of cards. A fight with tobacco dealers leads to Carmen’s arrest by Captain Zúñiga. In jail, she seduces Don José and convinces him to release her. Carmen is subsequently caught in a love triangle between Don José and popular bullfighter Escamillo.

PETRUSHKA: This ballet tells the story of the loves and jealousies of three puppets. The three are brought to life by the Charlatan during the 1830 Shrovetide Fair in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Petrushka loves the Ballerina, but she rejects him. She prefers the Moor. Petrushka is angry and hurt, and challenges the Moor. The Moor kills him with his scimitar. Petrushka’s ghost rises above the puppet theatre as night falls. He shakes his fist at the Charlatan, then collapses in a second death.

Tickets: $15 – $18 Prices include per ticket handling fees.
